MUJI was founded in Japan in 1980. The store offers a range of quality products including household goods, apparel and food. MUJI in Japanese, translates as “no-brand quality goods.” MUJI considers its success through its financial performance across retail (both online and stores) and the contributions it seeks to make to society in equal measure. There are more than 700 MUJI stores around the world, with more than 7,000 items ranging from clothing and household goods to food and even houses.

MUJI had been running on a bespoke platform that was custom built and maintained by their in-house tech team. Whilst the system was highly customisable, the architecture and coding could not keep up with the development in the industry. This prompted them to replatform to a more future-proof solution that provided more flexibility, reliability and scalability.

GPMD was chosen as the strategic agency partner to work with MUJI to migrate to BigCommerce; as well as implement the best-in-class tech stack for an innovative, highly performant site that provides a cutting-edge customer experiences through updated UX/UI designs.

Challenge

To become more viable and keep up with the industry standards, MUJI was looking for a strong ecommerce platform that could help them achieve their ambitious growth plans.

Solution

The replatform entailed building highly scalable BigCommerce sites for MUJI, ensuring they were responsive and highly intuitive. This enabled fast integrations and deployment of new features without heavy development.

UX / UI Design

GPMD designed an interface tailored to enhance user experience. This design not only maintains the essence of the brand, but also fosters the MUJI's trust among users, ensuring a seamless and satisfying interaction. Additionally, we set up new user flows and a UI component library and a design system guide for MUJI. Throughout the redesign, we focused on optimising the customer journey by working on human-centric designs.

Tech Stack

MUJI was able to leverage BigCommerce’s Open SaaS platform and functionalities, as well as a powerful tech stack. including Adyen and Paypal for the optimal setup for international payments, Klevu for AI ecommerce search and discovery, ShipperHQ for shipping needs across Europe, and Klaviyo for highly automated and personalised email marketing.

Our Solution for MUJI

We worked with MUJI to maximise the power of the BigCommerce platform and features to provide a cutting-edge customer experience. Working closely with the BigCommerce team, GPMD is also supporting MUJI with their long-term strategy and growth.

The replatform entailed building highly scalable websites for MUJI. We worked on web stores for five European markets (France, Germany/Austria, Spain/Portugal, Italy, UK) and one for the rest of Europe, ensuring they were responsive and highly intuitive. This enabled fast integrations and deployment of new features and tools without heavy development resources.

We also implemented integrations for a powerful tech stack including Adyen and Paypal for the optimal setup for international payments, Klevu for AI ecommerce search and discovery, ShipperHQ for shipping needs across Europe, and Klaviyo for highly automated and personalised email marketing.

Optimising the user experience with best-in-class designs was also a key part of MUJI’s migration project. GPMD designed an interface tailored to enhance user experience. This design not only maintains the essence of the brand, but also fosters the MUJI's trust among users, ensuring a seamless and satisfying interaction. Additionally, we set up new user flows and a UI component library and a design system guide for MUJI. Throughout the redesign, we focused on enhancing the experience on product pages for different customer journeys and the brand appeal to users by working on human-centric designs.

MUJI took the opportunity of migration to change their webstore structure into 5 instances for their key 5 markets in Europe and 1 instance for the rest of Europe. The 5 instances have localised languages, catalogues, pricing, categories, delivery methods and payments. This structure would allow them to add new markets to the rest of Europe easily in future.
